Now, Shurmur appears to be waiting on the Vikings to decide on his replacement before hiring an offensive coordinator for the Giants.
It is widely believed that Shurmur has his sights set on Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski, who is one of the four candidates who interviewed for Vikings offensive coordinator.
The difference between the two jobs is the Vikings offensive coordinator will be a gameday play-caller making it a more desirable stepping stone than the Giants offensive coordinator, who will have game plan input while gameday play-calling will be Shurmur's duty.
The Vikings have interviewed Stefanski, Darrell Bevell, former Giants tight end Dan Campbell and Sean Ryan and the list could expand because there are "a couple more we just want to get in front of,” according to Vikings general manager Rick Spielman.
“We’ll continue that process next week," Spielman said, leading to speculation that he might be waiting on Super Bowl coaches prohibited from interviews right now such as Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, "and then hopefully make a decision sometime in the near future after next week."
If that is the timetable, it could test Shurmur's patience as the Vikings drag out their search. It could test Stefanski's patience, too, if he believes he should be next in line as the only in-house candidate.

He would be the 2nd-youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL
At 35 years old, Stefanski would be the second-youngest offensive coordinator in the NFL behind Jim Bob Cooter (33), whose future with the Lions is uncertain because a new head coach (Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia) is on his way.
You can put an asterisk by that statistic because the Colts, Vikings, Rams and Giants all have offensive coordinator vacancies, so someone younger than Stefanski could fill one of those roles. Rams head coach Sean McVay, 32, might be his own offensive coordinator. He is the only head coach younger than Stefanski.
But the point stands: Stefanski would be on the young side and the NFL is trending toward young coaches.
