The Madras High Court has dismissed a plea seeking action against Director General of Police TK Rajendran under Prevention of Corruption Act for the alleged irregularities in the purchase of walkie talkies for the Police Department last year.
Chennai:
Observing that there can be no doubt that citizens have a right to prevent wastage of public money and ensure that the tax payers money is properly spent, the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose, said, “However, based on totally vague allegations built on hearsay and when as per petitioner’s own pleadings he has no technical expertise, such a writ petition cannot be entertained. Hence, dismissed.”
The petitioner R Senthil Murugan, an activist from Madurai, relying on a letter written by Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi raising 11 queries to the DGP on the tender granted to Motorola Solutions for Rs.83.45 Crore for purchase of walkie talkies had moved the public interest litigation alleging foul play. He said as per the scheme, 10,000 Walkie Talkies were to be purchased and the amount allotted for the same by the State was only Rs 47.56 crores.
But, the Motorola Solutions India Private Limited which quoted Rs 83.45 crores was allotted tender. The difference of Rs 35.89 crore in the purchase smacks of foul play, the petitioner alleged.
