Kasganj, Feb 3: The Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday arrested another person in connection with the Kasganj violence that broke out after a 22-year-old college student was killed in clashes during Tiranga Yatra taken out by the members of the VHP and ABVP on Republic Day.

The man arrested on Saturday has been identified as Rahat Qureshi who is a resident of Smilpur Road in Kasganj of Uttar Pradesh. No fresh violence was reported since Wednesday night in Kasganj, a PTI report said. However, the city looks like an impregnable fortress due to the heavy deployment of security personnel.

Earlier yesterday, the main accused in Kasganj violence, Salim, has confessed to firing shots and killing Chandan Gupta on January 26, TV reports claimed on Friday. The Uttar Pradesh Police had arrested him five days after the incident in connection to the killing the 22-year-old college student. At least three shops, two buses and a car were torched after Gupta died and as many as 118 people have been arrested till now.

The security outside the house of Chandan Gupta was also beefed up on Friday after his father alleged threat from unknown men. “I was sitting outside, some people came on the bike in morning. Stopped bike for a second & said that the accused are going to Jail, but others are still there. Don’t take enmity with us. We will see you,” he had told ANI.

The clash broke during an unauthorised bike rally taken out by RSS-affiliated students’ group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Kasganj to commemorate the Republic Day. Stones were allegedly hurled at them during to the roadshow resulting into violence.
