The Spice Girls are bringing Girl Power back for a new generation - but did it really go away?

The Spice Girls are back, with the group promising to reinforce "our message of female empowerment for future generations". 

The news that the five women were exploring "new opportunities together" comes almost 20 years after the band started to unravel with the departure of the then Geri Halliwell, and has sparked a wave of Nineties nostalgia. 

What they will actually do remains a mystery - Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice) has reportedly been given assurances she will not have to sing. 

But their announcement to keep alive their brand of feminism Girl Power comes at a time when the issue of women's rights has arguably never been so prominent. 

"For many of us, (the song) Wannabe planted the early seeds of feminism," wrote Daisy Buchanan in this paper.

Now those seeds have blossomed, do we really need Sporty, Posh, Ginger, Baby and Scary?  Here are just some of the female figures and movements...
