Police said they expect to make more arrests in the case.
An Alachua man was arrested Friday morning on six counts of attempted murder and his brother is being sought by police for a gang-related retaliation shooting on Jan. 15 that injured five people, including two children.
Kenzel Lashod Edwards, 22, was booked into the Alachua County Jail at 11:29 a.m. on the charges. Jails records indicate his bail was set at $1.5 million.
Alachua Police are also looking for 24-year-old McKenzly Alphae Edwards Jr., also on six counts of attempted murder.
They are accused of jumping out of a car and firing dozens of rounds at people in and outside of an SUV at 14223 NW 156th Place.
Meanwhile, Rakeidra Alexandria Neal, 27, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in an unrelated incident.
“Through our investigation we were able to determine that Kenzell Edwards, McKenzley Edwards and Rakeidra Neal are known associates of a small localized gang,” Chief Chad Scott said at a news conference late Friday afternoon. “There are other individuals who associate themselves with these so-called gangs. As I said before, this type of activity will not be tolerated here.”
On Tuesday, police arrested Kamarri Latrell Hampton, 15, who is suspected of killing Dana Walker Jr., 27, at Maude Lewis Park on Jan. 14. Police said Friday that Hampton is associated with a rival local gang and that the shootings the following day were retaliation.
Injured in the street shooting were Clifford Snead, 18, and Ron Fairley, 19, who is still hospitalized. Injured inside the SUV were Jasmine Thomas, 24, a 3-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl. A 20-month-old child was in the SUV but not injured. The children are Thomas’.
Police said Thomas was in the SUV socializing with Snead and Fairley when a vehicle drove up and two men witnesses identified as the Edwards brothers got out.
“The defendant and co-defendant drew firearms as they approached the vehicle and began to discharge the firearms into the interior of the vehicle,” police wrote in an arrest affidavit. “Over 20 rounds were fired into and around the vehicle.”
Sgt. Jesse Sandusky said at least 25 rounds were fired from an assault rifle.
One of Snead's lungs was punctured by gunshots and a bullet caused an abrasion to the left side of his head, the affidavit states. Fairley had life-threatening injuries to his lower back and legs.
Thomas had injuries to her right hand, including the loss of a finger. One child was grazed by a bullet on the back of her head while another had a gunshot wound to his right hand that will require several surgeries, according to the affidavit.
Police would not give the names of the gangs. Sgt. Jesse Sandusky said the turf of the rivals is in the same neighborhood. Neal is accused of taunting and pulling a gun on a rival gang member.
Walker also associated with members of a gang, Sandusky said.
“There are pretty much from the same area, within a block and a half of each other,” Sandusky said, adding that trouble can start when “one gang will talk about the other gang or be in their territory.”
An arrest warrant has been issued for McKenzly Edwards and APD is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Alachua Police Department at 386‐462‐1396 or the crime stoppers hotline at 352‐372‐STOP.
