Tornado tied for second in SWC wrestling

North Medford advanced 13 wrestlers to the semifinals — and berths in the Class 6A state tournament — during first-day action in the Southwest Conference district championships Friday at North Medford High.

The Black Tornado is tied for second place entering today’s final action. The championship matches are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

Defending champion Roseburg is in first place with 202 points, and the Black Tornado and Grants Pass have 131.5. South Medford is fourth with 78.5.

South Medford has six semifinalists.

“Realistically,” said North Medford coach Phillip Lopez, “things are going according to the seeds. There were a couple of upsets.”

The top four at each weight class advance to the state tournament Feb. 16-17 at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

ASHLAND GIRLS WIN: At Eugene, the Ashland girls won a three-way meet against North Eugene and Crater, and the Grizzly boys placed second in a Midwestern League meet.

Ashland’s girls scored 131 points, North Eugene 107 and Crater 64.

In the boys meet, North Eugene scored 116, Ashland 109 and Crater 49.

The Grizzly girls won eight of 11 events. Alexandra Westrick knocked 10 seconds off her best in winning the 200-yard freestyle. Olivia McMonagle won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

For the Crater girls, Alexis Harbour was second in the 100 butterfly in a personal-best 1:18.99, and second in the 200 individual medley in 2:46.52.

Kayla McDowell was third in the 200 IM in 3:00.94, and Abby Zolkoske third in the 200 freestyle (2:22.55) and 500 free (6:38.84).

In the boys meet, Ashland’s Chris Frownfelter claimed the 100 back in 58.33, and Baylor Wiggins won the 200 and 500 frees.
