Authorities say a man was shot by police after he showed up at his ex-wife's house in North Carolina, violating a restraining order.
Buncombe County deputies identified the man wounded as Dayton Rice, who remains in the hospital.
A 911 call released by deputies has Rice's son telling the operator that Rice's mother died three days before and he had been spiraling out of control.
In the call, the son asks 911 if the deputies could get his father some help.
Deputies said in a news release that Rice was standing in the road and did not follow demands he drop his gun. No one else was injured.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The deputy who shot Rice, Adam Honeycutt, Is on paid leave.
