2018 recruiting update: Dayton offers scholarship to JUCO guard

Flyers also recruiting another junior college guard who ranks in top 100 of JUCO players

The Dayton Flyers offered a scholarship to one junior college recruit and have visited another, according to reports.

Brandon Mahan, a 6-foot-5 freshman guard from Chipola College, a junior college in Marianna, Fla., received a scholarship offer from Dayton, according to JucoRecruiting.com.

Mahan is a graduate of Central Park Christian High School in Birmingham, Ala. He has averaged 13.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 21 games for Chipola. He’s shooting 53.5 percent from the field, 52 percent from 3-point range (64 of 123) and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line.

Dayton has one scholarship open for 2018, but there’s always the possibility of more scholarships opening up if players decide to transfer. Dwayne Cohill is the program’s only signed 2018 recruit.

According to the Hutchison News, Dayton coach Anthony Grant visited another junior college recruit: J.J. Rhymes, a 6-4 sophomore guard at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchison, Kansas. He ranks 18th among junior-college players, according to JucoRecruiting.com.

Rhymes has averaged 20.9 points per game, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 22 games. He’s from Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, Az. He’s shooting 48 percent from the field, 30.8 percent from 3-point range (16 of 52) and 72 percent from the free-throw line.

Rhymes was a non-qualifier out of high school, according to AZCentral.com. He helped lead Hutchinson to a junior college national championship last season.

The last junior college player to sign with Dayton was Detwon Rogers, who transferred to Dayton in April 2014 and left the program in March 2015. He never played a game for the Flyers.
