CLC celebrates women in sports with basketball game free for students
Central Lakes College is celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day by inviting area students to attend a women's basketball game for free.
Any area student, no matter what age, will get in free to the Wednesday women's basketball game against Mesabi Range Community and Technical College at 5:30 p.m., Central Lakes College's Brainerd campus gym.
The day is intended to celebrate the extraordinary achievements in girls' and women's sports and the positive influence athletic participation brings to their lives. National Girls and Women in Sports Day recognizes the ongoing effort towards equality and access for women in sports and the nation's commitment to expand sport and participation opportunities for all girls and future generations.
"As a person who has benefited from Title IX and from participation in athletics I am happy to celebrate NGWSD," said Jane Peterson, longtime head volleyball coach, who was recently named American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year. "I am grateful for those who paved the way for my own experience as a competitor and teammate and leader. There are so many things that being involved in competitive athletics has taught me and provided for me: resilience, confidence, teamwork, leadership, communication skills, relationship building, and for me, thankfully, a career!
"There is no better way to encourage young girls to participate than actually watching young women in person—competing, working hard and having fun!"
Peterson said she hoped people can make to the Wednesday women's game.
