JAMALPUR, Feb 2: The termination of gas supply to Jamuna Fertiliser Company Ltd (JFCL) at Tarakandi in Sarishabari Upazila of the district suspended urea fertiliser production from Thursday.
The JFCL will not produce the urea fertiliser till the Boro season is over  in three months.
The decision was taken to ensure gas supply to the gas-fuelled power plants across the country so that they can generate sufficient electricity to keep the power-run irrigation pumps running during the current Boro season, said Mahbuba Sultana, managing director (MD) of JFCL.
Directed by Petro Bangla, Titas Gas Transmission Company served a notice to JFCL on Wednesday saying that the gas supply would remain stopped during this season, the MD also said.
"Following the decision made by the transmission company, we stopped urea production at 1:15 am. If the production stops for three months, we will not achieve the urea production target in the current fiscal year. The production target at JFCL is 3.80 lakh metric tons of urea in this fiscal whereas we have produced only 2.60 lakh metric tons so far," the MD added.
"Moreover, the demand of urea in 20 district including 16 northern ones is one lakh metric tons in this February, but we have 67,000 metric tons in stock only, which will create a crisis of the fertiliser," the MD also added.
