SOUTH BELOIT — A man posing as a water company worker robbed a Bethany Court home of jewelry just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, South Beloit police said.

A homeowner arrived home to find a Hispanic man in his mid-20s in his driveway. The suspect, dressed in a dark-colored sweatshirt, dark worn gloves and a dark stocking hat, said there was a problem with the home's water. The homeowner allowed the subject into the house and followed him throughout as he turned on water.

The subject spoke Spanish into a portable radio. When the subject left the house, he met up with another Hispanic male, and they entered a gray older-model Chevrolet Trailblazer. The homeowners then discovered the bedroom had been ransacked and jewelry stolen.

Police Chief Patrick Hoey said men videotaped by surveillance cameras at a nearby gas station about the same time as the burglary are suspects in the burglary. Surveillance video shows there was a third man in the vehicle.

The water company serving South Beloit is Illinois American Water. Employees drive vehicles with logos, have photo identification and wear clothes with logos, police said. Call the police if you are suspicious.

Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call police at 815-389-3491 or Rockford Area Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
