Bhopal leads in tongue cancer in world, says Oncologist

Bhopal : Bhopal is leading in tongue cancer in world while districts like Gwalior, Bhind, Morena are leading in gall balder cancer. In women, breast cancer is on the rise in the state in place of uterus cancer, which was on top earlier.
Twenty new advanced cancer treatment facilities are in pipeline across the country.For Madhya Pradesh, the Centre has planned a new State Cancer Institute (SCI), along with two Tertiary Care Cancer Centres (TCCC). The three facilities planned for MP are: Vidisha district hospital, GR Medical College, Gwalior, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur. The first two are to be TCCCs while the one at Jabalpur would be a SCI.
Major risk factors suggested tobacco and diet (non-vegetarian) as crucial associated with cancers identified were tobacco and diet risk factors associated with cancers in MP and UP.
Dr Shayam Agrawal, oncologist, Navodaya Hospital, said, “Bhopal is leading in world in tongue cancer while districts located in boarder areas of UP are leading in gall bladder cancer cases. Similarly, uterus cancer held top position but now days, it is replaced by breast cancer.”
Dr Agrawal said, “It is a matter of concern and people will have to change their lifestyle like giving up tobacco, alcohol etc. Such evils and lifestyle increase the chances of cancer. Initial stage diagnosis and detection is necessary and people should immediately consult the doctors, if they have any kind of doubt.”
