Los Angeles Rams' Sean McVay is NFL's Coach of the Year

McVay took over a 4-12 club that had gone backward under Jeff Fisher in consecutive seasons and seemingly overnight turned it into an 11-5 juggernaut that won the the NFC West and boasted two of the NFL's more improved players, never mind the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

The Rams offense, one year after ranking dead last in total points, finished first while more than doubling the 2016 unit's output. The offensive savant's work with 2016 No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff and 2015 Offensive Rookie of the Year Todd Gurley — who on Saturday night was named Offensive Player of the Year — was sensational.

Goff nearly raised his completion percentage by eight full points (from 54.6 to 62.1) and passer rating by 40 (from 63.6 to 100.5). Gurley, who managed just 3.2 yards per carry in a massively disappointing sophomore campaign, rebounded under McVay by leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage and touchdowns.

But McVay also showed the wisdom upon his hiring to bring on defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and retain special teams coordinator John Fassel, each of whom ran units that were nearly as explosive as the offense, which McVay called plays for while delegating with confidence to his experienced assistants.
