HAYSVILLE — Win or lose, strange things always seem to happen to the Newton High School boys’ basketball team when they play at Campus.
Friday night’s game was no exception as the Railers had three starters foul out, including their two top starters, in a 70-68 overtime loss.
Ty Berry fouled out with 22 points. Demarius Peterson fouled out with two points. Isaiah Presley fouled out late in overtime.
“They always seem to be exciting games that come down to the wire,” Newton coach Andy Hill said. “It was a very hard fought game. Both teams battled very hard and competed. We just came out on the wrong end unfortunately.”
Campus, 7-7 overall and 3-4 in AV-CTL I play, was led by freshman Sterling Chapman with 31 points. Tyler Kahmann added 19.
Alex Krogmeier finished with 22 points for Newton, 7-9 overall and 4-3 in AV-CTL I play. Jamieson Jones added 10.
Newton jumped out 5-1, but Campus came back to tie. Tied 8-8, Newton went on a 6-0 run. A Kahmann layup with three seconds left in the period put the Colts within three, 15-12.
Campus scored a layup to start the second quarter. A foul and technical foul on the Colts gave Berry three of four free throws. Newton led by as many as seven. Campus came back to within two. A Berry layup just before the buzzer put Newton up 36-32 at the half.
After a four of 12 start, Newton finished the half 12 of 25 from the field. After a four and 16 start, Campus finished the half, 12 of 26.
Newton led by five early in the second half, missing chances to extend it. Campus got back within one, missing chances to take the lead. Chapman tied the game 40-40 with a pair of free throws with 2:42 left in the period. Fifteen seconds later, Cade Howard hit one of two free throws. Campus, aided by two technicals against the Railers, led 46-40 at the end of the period.
Damarius Peterson opened the fourth quarter with a layup, but missed a subsequent free throw. Chapman followed with a three-point play to spark a 6-0 run and get Campus out by 10. Newton came back with a Berry three-point play and a Krogmeier trey with 4:58 in regulation. Berry followed with a pair free throws to get Newton within two. Valdez hit a three-point play with 3:58 to put the Railers back in the lead. Jones followed with a layup.
Campus came back with a Chapman putback to get Campus within one. After Berry fouled out, Campus missed a pair of free throws, but came back with a defensive stop and a Chapman layup with 1:46 in regulation to put the Colts back in the lead.
Krogmeier hit a trey with 1:20 in the period to put Newton up by two. Chapman then hit two free throws. K.J. Hampton put Newton back up with a layup with 37 seconds to play. Chapman answered with a layup 14 seconds later.
Newton turned the ball over with 4.0 seconds left in the period. After two Campus time outs, the Colts missed a shot just inside the half court.
Krogmeier scored first for Newton, followed by a Kahmann putback. After a pair of missed free throws for Newton, Chapman hit a layup to put Campus in the lead. Chapman hit one of two free throws with 1:06 left in overtime to put the Colts up by three. Chapman hit one more free throw with 32.5 seconds left. Kahmann followed with two free throws.
Krogmeier hit a trey with 15 seconds left to get Newton back within three. Chapman hit two more free throws with 12.6 seconds remaining. Krogmeier hit a trey at the buzzer to get Newton within two.
“We’re obviously not used to playing without (Berry) for long stretches,” Hill said. “So there was a feeling out period of what do we do. I was proud of those guys. They kept battling. They didn’t give up. They didn’t make enough plays down the stretch.”
Newton is off until Friday, when the Railers host Derby for Winter Sports Fest. The Panthers are 10-4, 6-1 in league play after a 72-63 win over Maize. Derby beat Newton 90-71 earlier this season.
“We’ll take tomorrow off and get a couple of practices in to get ready for Derby Friday,” Hill said. “I know the guys are excited about that. It’s a chance to show more improvement. The guys are excited to come home.”
