BIRMINGHAM – At the AHSAA Indoor State Track and Field Championships at Birmingham’s CrossPlex, American Christian Academy, which swept the boys’ and girls’ titles last season in Class 1A/3A, held slim leads after Friday’s events with the girls holding a 43-41 edge over Bayside Academy.
Winfield, the runner-up in the boys’ competition in 2017, scored 29 points to hold a five-point lead over defending champion Scottsboro (23) with five events finished in 4A/5A.
Paul W. Bryant's boys were in third place with 26 points in Class 6A. Homewood was in first with 52.5 points.
Individually in the boys' division, Winfield junior Walker Junkin set a record in the Class 4A/5A pole vault. He won the event clearing 15 feet, 4 inches.
Okheme Moore of Hillcrest ran the 60-meter dash in 6.84 seconds to set a new 6A state indoor record in Class 6A. Zion Binion of Northridge tossed the shot put 50-01.50 to win the championship.
In Class 4A/5A, Tanner King of Northside won the 800-meters (1:56.17).
In Class 1A/3A, James Jackson of ACA cleared 13-03 in the pole vault for the title and the ACA 4X200 relay team won with a time of 1:35.25.
In girls' action, Kayleigh Atkins of ACA set a new 1A/3A state record in the 60-meter hurdles (9.08 seconds) while Harper Roberts of ACA won the 800 meters (2:19.68).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Escambia Acad. 55,
Pickens Acad. 41
MONTGOMERY – It was a near-perfect season for Pickens . The Pirates took their lone loss of the season in a run that took them to AISA Class AA semifinals, falling in the Final Four to Escambia Academy at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl. Pickens Academy ends the season at 18-1.
Hamner Allen led the Pirates’ scoring with 11 points, and Lee Acker was next with 10 points. Both Austin Goodman and Seth Peeks scored seven points.
Escambia (16-3) will play for the AA state title on Monday against Macon East Academy.
Tuscaloosa County 42,
Holt 24
At Tuscaloosa County, Darrell Collins led the Wildcats with 14 points. Jaylun Murray hit for 10 points and Fred Evans scored eight.
Holt's Josh Strozier scored nine.
TCHS (10-14) plays Vestavia Hills in Hoover in the Class 7A, Area 5 tournament on Wednesday.
South Lamar 76,
Lamar County 38
MILLPORT – Four players scored in double figures to lead South Lamar’s home win. Malik Cox had 19 points, followed by Malachi Oglen with 17, Alex Carter with 12 and Chase Gore with 11.
Leaders for Lamar County were Charles Wise with eight points and both Taye Buchanan and Matthew Duke with seven points apiece.
South Lamar (16-6) now awaits play in the Class 1A, Area 9 tournament, which it will host, beginning on Monday.
Holy Spirit 88,
Oakman 56
Jaylon Stevenson led the charge with 25 points in the Saints’ home win. Both Mason Mulanix and Braylin Rhodes scored 14 points and Phil McDuff 13.
Holy Spirit (13-9) will play next in the Class 1A, Area 9 tournament against Pickens County on Tuesday at 6 p.m. South Lamar is hosting the tournament.
Tuscaloosa Christian 60,
Meadowview Christian 42
COTTONDALE – Tuscaloosa Christian School celebrated its two seniors at its game on Friday night, and both made it a night worth celebrating as senior Tanner Burrows scored 21 points and made 11 rebounds and his fellow senior teammate Clay Ramsey had 16 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.
The Warriors (17-3) begin postseason play by hosting a sub-state game at home on Thursday.
Sipsey Valley 62,
Northridge 59
Leading the game and Sipsey Valley was Dakari Smith who scored 21 points for the Bears. Both Tyrin Lanier and Jamirrus Fuller scored 14.
Northridge's leading scorers were Sedrick Pettway with 15 points and Micah Johnson with 13.
On Tuesday in the Class 4A, Area 7 tournament hosted by Holt, Sipsey Valley will play Northside.
GIRLS
Autauga Academy 34,
Pickens Academy 33
MONTGOMERY – The season ended for Pickens Academy with a one-point loss in the AISA Class AA Final Four. Autauga Academy defeated Pickens Academy at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in the state semifinal.
Audrey Fondren scored 10 points. Olivia Lewis ended the game with four points for the Pirates.
Autauga (19-4) will face Wilcox on Monday at noon for the AA state championship.
Holy Spirit 62,
Oakman 45
On senior night for Holy Spirit, Imani Thompson led the way with 24 points, four steals and three assists. Senior Aryn Head scored 18 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Senior Laura Spence had 10 steals and seven points.
Holy Spirit (18-2) hosts the Class 1A, Area 9 tournament, which begins Monday. Holy Spirit plays Tuesday against the winner of South Lamar-Hubbertville.
Selma 58,
Central 56 (OT)
SELMA - Quintasia Leatherwood led the Falcons with 20 points and nine assists in the loss. Conajah Jones had 14 points and LaTarius Montgomery had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Central (21-7) hosts the Class 5A, Area 7, which starts Monday. Central plays the winner of Sumter Central-Demopolis on Wednesday for the area title.
Northside 50,
West Blocton 13
SAMANTHA – All four of Northside’s seniors played and scored on a night where the Rams honored its senior players. Of those four, Summer Geer scored nine points, both Ally Cametti and Brooke Swindle scored four and Makala Worrell scored two. Destinee Owens and Lilly Stone scored eight.
West Blocton was led by Makenzie Parks with seven points.
Northside (6-11) will play in the Class 4A, Area 7 tournament against Holt on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Sipsey Valley is the tournament host.
Sipsey Valley 52,
Northridge 30
Sipsey Valley’s key scoring came via 25 points from Taylor Smith and 20 from Denetria Williams.
High scorer for Northridge was Chelsie Elliott with 10 points.
Sipsey Valley (23-2) will host the Class 4A, Area 7 tournament. On Wednesday, Sipsey Valley plays Oak Grove at 7:30 p.m., and Holt will play Northside at 6 p.m. The Area 7 championship game will be on Friday at 7 p.m.
