HOPKINTON – Police do not know how or who brought a single piece of ammunition to the Hopkinton High School that forced the evacuation of all students and a lockdown at the nearby middle school on Thursday.

Although police do not believe the piece of ammunition, a rifle round, was meant as any sort of threat, Chief Edward Lee said, they still do not know how it got there.

“We’re still trying to investigate to determine who brought it in,” Lee said on Friday.

Lee would not say where the rifle round was found, although it was initially reported to have been in the boys team room. He also wouldn’t say who found the round or when they round the round.

“I can’t comment on that because it could hinder the investigation,” Lee said.

He said police do not believe a gun was brought onto the school campus and did not think any students were in danger.

“We’re still just trying to pinpoint who brought it in,” the chief said.

There were no classes at the high school Friday due to a planned professional development day for teachers and staff.
