Coimbatore, Feb 3: Serving vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University A Ganapathi was arrested for accepting Rs 30 lakh bribe from an aspirant for the post of Assistant Professor. Ganapathi was arrested on Saturday for accepting a bribe from one Suresh for reserving a post of Assistant Professor post for him.

Ganapathi had allegedly demanded a huge sum of money but settled for Rs 30 lakh. Ganapathy was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officials at his residence after he allegedly accepted Rs 29 lakh by cheque and one lakh in cash.

The DVAC officials had given chemically treated notes to the complainant and arrested the VC when he took the cash from him at his residence opposite the university campus on Marudhamalai Road in Coimbatore. More than police and revenue personnel were deployed during the operation, the police added.

Further investigation is underway. The police have also been searching the VC’s residence. Ganapathi had been the VC of the Bharathiar University since 2016. During his controversial tenure, Ganapathi appointed several assistant professors for the Universit before the state government intervened and stopped the recruitment.
