Kanpur, Feb 3: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested Goods and Services Tax (GST) Commissioner Sansar Chand, posted in Kanpur, for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh. Along with him, two Superintendents, one office staff and five private persons have also been nabbed in a late-night operation spread across Kanpur and Delhi. The probe agency has also registered an FIR against Sansar’s wife, Avinash Kaur, in the case.
The agency has booked them under the charges of criminal conspiracy of Indian Penal Code and provisions of Prevention of Corruption act.
According to sources close to PTI, Sansar Chand, a 1986-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, was a “habitual” offender. The commissioner was further accused of taking bribes from businessmen on monthly and weekly basis. He was apprehended during one such collection of Rs 1.5 lakh on Friday night.
The man who allegedly gave the bribe has also been taken into custody, reports say.
Reportedly, the arrests were made after agency received several complaints of bribery against IRS officer and his three junior staff besides five private individuals, sources close to CBI told The Times of India.
Other eight accused have been identiffied as Ajay Srivastava, superintendent, GST and Central Excise, Aman Shah superintendent, GST and Central Excise, Rajeev Singh Chandel, superintendent, GST and Central Excise, Saurabh Pandey, office staff GST and Central Excise Commissionerate, Manish Sharma, director M/S Shishu Soap and Chemical private ltd (private individual), Amit Awasthi (private individual), Aman Jain (private individual), Chandra Prakash alias Monu (private individual), claims TOI report.
