Uma Thurman Reveals She Almost Died in a Stunt That Quentin Tarantino Made Her Do

Uma Thurman has accused director Quentin Tarantino of forcing her to perform a stunt on the set of Kill Bill that almost killed her.

The actress told the New York Times that she was four days away from finishing the nine-month shoot for the two films when Tarantino said she would be driving the blue convertible and not a stunt performer.

Uma didn’t feel comfortable driving the car and says a teamster led her to believe the car might not be working well.

Quentin came in my trailer and didn’t like to hear no, like any director,” she says. “He was furious because I’d cost them a lot of time. But I was scared. He said: ‘I promise you the car is fine. It’s a straight piece of road.’”

Quentin told her to “’hit 40 miles per hour or your hair won’t blow the right way and I’ll make you do it again.’ But that was a deathbox that I was in. The seat wasn’t screwed down properly. It was a sand road and it was not a straight road.”

In video footage shared by the Times, Uma can be seen driving down a winding road and then crash into a tree. “The steering wheel was at my belly and my legs were jammed under me. I felt this searing pain and thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m never going to walk again.’ When I came back from the hospital in a neck brace with my knees damaged and a large massive egg on my head and a concussion, I wanted to see the car and I was very upset. Quentin and I had an enormous fight, and I accused him of trying to kill me. And he was very angry at that, I guess understandably, because he didn’t feel he had tried to kill me.”

Uma says that it took her 15 years for her to obtain the footage and that Miramax tried to get her to sign a document “releasing them of any consequences of my future pain and suffering” in exchange for the footage. She didn’t sign it.

“When they turned on me after the accident, I went from being a creative contributor and performer to being like a broken tool,” Uma said.

Make sure to also read what Uma said in the article about being attacked by producer Harvey Weinstein, who produced the Kill Bill movies.

She had one husband cheating on her with whores, another man trying to rape her, another who didn’t give a shit about her safety… She must’ve had it with men at this point.

The stunt team should have checked the car though, that’s down to them, not Tarantino. It’s entirely possible he assumed they had done their job in providing a safe car for his leading actor to drive. When you hire people as a director it’s people who do their job properly so you can concentrate on your job. It’s not his job to check the car seat is screwed down properly. And I don’t doubt they have a rollercoaster relationship, she was his muse for over a decade. I also don’t doubt he can be difficult on set, and it might be easy to feel bullied by him. I love Uma and I hate that she had to deal with Weinstein but we can’t equate what Weinstein did to her with an on set accident. Im not shocked she was treated badly after the accident though, Harvey had the reins on that too, the footage etc

I always thought in that scene she was in an immobile car where they have the “scenery” moving by, because it looked so fake. Everyone knows what an asshat Tarantino is.

  • werd

Yes, it’s the stunt team’s job, but it was QUENTIN who promised her the car was safe, and it wasn’t. This is on him.

  • Casey C

nope, as director he’s accountable for everything that happens, regardless. thats like saying nobody can sue a contractor for what the job their employee did- at the end of the day, the guy at the top is accountable for what those he hired do or don’t do. end of the day, he is the one that stated it was fine – with or without checking with the stunt team – and therefore he’s just as at fault

  • Casey C

no they weren’t – she has always denied that they dated, she stated it was ‘rumour’ and nothing else, that they were never romantically involved

  • LittlePaperStars

And as I said, Im sure he assumed the stunt team had done their job, like literally any director would, and provided a safe car. What was he supposed to do, go do a full service on the car himself before she got in?

  • LittlePaperStars

Given that Uma was apparently in her trailer, her account of what happened can’t say whether or not Tarantino had been told by the stunt team if it was safe, she wasn’t on set to see if the stunt team gave the thumbs up while the shot was being set up. I’m sure she’s telling the truth, I’m sure he promised the car was safe, but what is being assumed is that he knew it wasn’t and deliberately put her in harms way. There is literally no proof that happened or didn’t. I’m going to choose to believe that as difficult as he can be as a director, his long term relationship with Uma would suggest he wouldn’t deliberately risk her life.

  • person

That is f-ed up that she was bullied into that. So often we try to please others by to causing a fuss and end up getting hurt ourselves. We need to trust our own instincts. so sorry that happened to her that is scary

  • Casey C

I can’t thank you enough for putting words in my mouth. I didn’t say he was a ‘monster’ that’s you, nor did I say he deliberately misled her, again that’s your fiction. I very deliberately stated that he may or may not have checked with the stunt team, but that unless they straight up told him it was safe, and he then promised that to Uma, he is just as accountable as the stunt team. he shouldn’t make promises about something, esp stunts, if he doesn’t have the information.

  • Casey C

No, he’s expected to speak with the stunt team or at very least receive a report from his assistant or the AD that the stunt team signed off on it. if he didn’t and promised her that it was safe and went ahead with it, that’s on him. never assume anything, esp when stunts are involved and you’re promising things to actors.

  • LittlePaperStars

You’re assuming he didn’t do that. Wheres the proof he didn’t?

  • Danae

Don’t forget about Lapo Elkann who tried to consume her face during that rather unfortunate amfAR gala in France

  • Casey C

you state that you believe that he told her that, so you would have to believe he also stated it was a straight road, which it wasn’t, which would be a lie. so half of what he’s accused of saying was a lie, that’s not a great place to be coming from.
Miramax’s response is highly suggestive. rather than pin blame on a stunt organisation, they wanted silence. Tarantino refused to comment which also tends to not look great

  • LittlePaperStars

I agree he shouldn’t make statements of safety, but there is no proof that he didn’t get told by the stunt team that it was safe, that’s my point. What is being assumed (not necessarily by you, but in a larger sense across social media etc) is that he knew it wasn’t safe, ie the stunt team said “nope too dangerous, the car is a deathtrap” and he went ahead got her to do it anyway, if he did, then yes, absolutely, stand up and be counted. But while he takes overall responsibility for a set, if the information given to him by any member of a department isn’t accurate, then short of him giving the car an MOT personally, I’m not sure what he’s supposed to do. At some point, you have to believe that the highly trained people you hired to do their job are doing just that. Personally, I’d like to hear from Tarantino himself. Again, I’m not targeting you, or putting words in your mouth, that was never actually my intention, my apologies. But I’ve read far too many people today talking like he was the one holding a wrench, standing over a car with the wheel hanging off screaming “get in the car Uma, it’s totally safe, I promise ” He’s not entirely blameless, I agree, but without a full account, hearing from every side, I personally don’t want to condemn him ( thats not saying you do btw, just to be clear)
