BEAUFORT — Authorities have charged a construction worker with stealing more than $100,000 worth of construction materials and tools from the North River bridge project site.
The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday David Jonathan Reinhardt, 47, of Tampa, Fla., was arrested last month in connection with the investigation.
Mr. Reinhardt was an employee of Carolina Bridge Company, of Orangeburg, S.C., when he allegedly stole the materials, according to a release.
The detective on the case, Greg Mason, alleges Mr. Reinhardt used company vehicles – including an 18-wheeler – to transport 1,100 feet of stolen aluminum bridge rail, 55 feet of metal piping and other metal fittings stolen from the construction site after hours.
At the time, Mr. Reinhardt was living at 109 Arthur Road in Beaufort as part of his employment with Carolina Bridge Company, “conveniently located near to the construction site,” the release reads.
Authorities allege Mr. Reinhardt sold the metal for scrap to a dealer in Craven County, along with selling stolen tools in Jacksonville.
The sheriff’s office charged him with two counts each of felony larceny and possession of stolen property, along with 13 counts of unauthorized use of a company vehicle.
He remains in the Carteret County jail under a $35,300 bond, and faces additional charges of obtaining property by false pretenses in Onslow and Craven counties.
