National Weather Service graphic

Much of the Northland is in line to see 2 to 4 inches of snow today, followed by a return to bitterly cold conditions tonight.

The National Weather Service in Duluth said snow will continue to spread across the region today, with the heaviest snow expected between about 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Twin Ports, Cloquet and Northwestern Wisconsin until 6 p.m.; those areas are expected to see snow totals of 2 to 4 inches, the Weather Service said. Parts of Northwestern Wisconsin may see locally higher amounts.

Areas north and well west of Duluth are forecast to see lesser snowfall of perhaps 1 to 3 inches, with only a dusting expected along the Canadian border.

In the wake of the snow, temperatures are forecast to plummet tonight into Sunday. Lows in Duluth are expected to reach the teens below zero tonight, with 20s below to the north. Highs on Sunday may struggle to climb above zero.

Widespread wind chills of 20 to 35 below zero are expected tonight, the Weather Service reported.
