A CAFÉ owner is urging fellow businesses to support a campaign to reduce plastic waste.

Sam Zair’s Café in Bishop Auckland was among the first in County Durham to sign up to the Refill campaign, which aims to cut plastic bottle use by providing free refills.

Councillor Sam Zair said: “We saw the Blue Planet documentary and were shocked by the amount of plastic in the oceans. We wanted to do something and this is good way to start.”

Heidi Mottram, chief executive of Northumbrian Water, which is driving the campaign in the region, said: “More than 90 Refill Stations have now been registered across the North-East and this number is growing daily. People like Mr Zair, who is the first to register in Bishop Auckland town centre, inspire others, helping that momentum to continue, and supporting the public’s efforts to move away from single-use plastics.”
