MANILA, Philippines — Rommel Salinas, whom authorities arrested and said is a secretary of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been in government custody since May 2017, the National Union of People's Lawyers said Friday.

According to earlier reports, Northern Mindanao regional police had arrested Salinas at Bernard Subdivision, City Hall Drive, Barangay Aguada, Ozamiz City

He was reportedly arrested on Thursday for the crimes of frustrated murder and destructive arson.

NUPL said Salinas, whom it said is a National Democratic Front peace consultant, has been in detention for a separate case.

It said Salinas and Iglesia Filipina Independiente Bishop Carlo Morales were at the Ozamiz City Hall of Justice "on a pending trumped-up case for illegal possession of explosives" when the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group "tried to 'serve' a warrant for frustrated murder and arson."

NUPL said: "There is one catch though: the warrant was already served last May 2017."

The group called "the misleading police spot check report and press release going the rounds of media giving the wrong impression that he was only arrested yesterday in a subdivision is false and a cheap propaganda stunt to sow terror and confusion."
