Kindergarten students in Beth Drubel's class at Cambridge Primary, show how groundhogs act while wearing cool groundhog headbands they made in observance of Groundhog Day. The students also have been learning about the groundhog and where they live and what they eat. Students made a prediction about whether Buckeye Chuck will see its shadow today. Eleven students said it would not see its shadow while 10 believes it will. Groundhog day is derived from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if he does not, due to cloudiness, spring season will arrive early.
