€36 million in old Maltese liri remain ‘missing’ as deadline expires

When the deadline elapsed on Wednesday, Lm15,638,748 remained ‘missing’, as they were not exchanged into euros, the Central Bank of Malta said.

The public had until Wednesday at 12:30pm to exchange their old lira notes for euros. The old Maltese currency has now ceased to be exchangeable and is worthless.

The value of the unchanged liri amounts to €36,428,483.57, or around €100 per adult population.

Lm412,916 equivalent to €961,835.55 were exchanged during January 2018.

The largest amount was exchanged on the last day, 31 January 2018, when Lm78,178, equivalent to €182,105.75, were delivered to the Bank.

The same day also witnessed the largest single transaction of Lm28,190, equivalent to €65,665.04.
