Kirk Cousins is officially the belle of the 2018 free-agent QB ball after Washington on Tuesday night agreed to acquire Alex Smith in a blockbuster trade with the Chiefs in exchange for a third-rounder and CB Kendall Fuller.
When did Cousins find out that he was officially out of the picture in Washington? Not until Wednesday morning — at least 12 hours after the entire interweb knew — he told NFL Media on radio row at the Super Bowl on Friday.
It shouldn't be surprising that the organization owned by Daniel Snyder and run by Bruce Allen, which has treated everyone from Cousins to former GM Scot McCloughan to Snyder's own father with not even an ounce of respect, would act so unprofessionally.
Still, it's difficult to fathom how a quarterback who did everything the organization asked of him in three consecutive stellar contract years would be the last to find out Smith would take his job and the new contract Washington was unwilling to offer Cousins.
Smith is a great consolation prize for Washington, though the potential "savings" the team will get from going with the older vet could easily be offset by the draft pick and ascending corner it gave up to move on from Cousins.
Regardless, it says here Cousins — who's roughly six weeks away from likely becoming the NFL's highest-paid quarterback — will have the last laugh in this matter. Perhaps he should ring up his old employers the day after he signs the contract to let them know the joke's on them.
