House Speaker Paul Ryan is in favor of releasing a Democratic memo that defends Justice Department and FBI officials from allegations in a separate memo by House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes.
“The speaker is in favor of greater transparency. If it is scrubbed to ensure it does not reveal sources and methods of our intelligence gathering, the speaker supports the release of the Democrats' memo," Ryan's spokeswoman Ashlee Strong told The Hill.
The Nunes memo reportedly details abuse in the agency's surveillance practices during the 2016 election.
Senior White House officials are worried that FBI Director Christopher Wray could quit if the president releases Nunes' memo.
On Monday, the House Intelligence Committee voted to release the memo, but blocked Democrats from releasing their rebuttal.
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the committee, said their response "sets out the proper context."
