DOT wants more green establishments

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Tourism aims to grow the number of its green tourism-related establishments (TREs) in the next 10 years, in line with its push for a more sustainable tourism sector.

On the sidelines of the ASEAN Tourism Standards Awarding Ceremony, DOT director for Office of Tourism Standards and Regulations Danilo Intong said less than 10 percent of accredited TREs are green developments.

The DOT commends TREs for their sustainability efforts as part of the ASEAN agreement on sustainable tourism development.

Intong said the DOT’s push for a more progressive accreditation system would also attract more TREs to apply for accreditation and implement more sustainable operations.

Last year, the DOT announced its plan to implement a progressive accreditation system, which features three levels of accreditation. This will start from basic accreditation to regular accreditation then move to star rating system.
