A Texas sheriff's deputy is in serious condition after being shot multiple times while responding to a theft report at a home.

Caldwell County sheriff's Sgt. William Miller says the shooting occurred early Friday at a house near Dale, a small community about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Austin.

Miller says deputies came under fire as they approached the home. Miller says wounded deputy was in serious condition at a hospital and is he's facing surgery that could last much of the day. Miller declined to release the deputy's name.

Two people have been arrested, but authorities haven't identified them. Miller said he wasn't sure what charges may be pending.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation.
