A grant from the Chapman Cultural Center will help Spartanburg Community College publish a student-managed magazine.
The center recently awarded $517.33 to SCC for the production of "Ascend" magazine, set to debut in the spring. The literary and arts magazine was funded because of the organization's commitment to the arts in and around Spartanburg.
The grants are partly funded by the S.C. Arts Commission, and SCC was one of five groups awarded money by Chapman.
"Ascend will provide our students the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents, as well as gain experience in project design and management," Ember Smith, SCC English professor and magazine adviser, said in a statement. "They are excited to have a chance to express themselves and build their skills, and this grant will help them reach their goals. We look forward to showcasing work by our talented students later this spring."
Students manage the magazine's submissions, layout, art and printing at a local facility.
