Two more tenants have left Westfield Sarasota Square following the departure of two of its department store anchors.
The stores that once belonged to Verizon Wireless and The Body Shop were dark on Thursday and their gates were down. Both retailers had been removed from the mall’s online directory.
The two stores join about a dozen others that have left the mall since Macy’s announced its departure early last year. Sarasota Square also lost its Sears anchor mid-last year. The Children’s Place, Pacific Sunwear and A’Gaci were among more recent closures.
The indoor shopping center at U.S. 41 and Beneva Road has also added some new tenants in recent months, such as family play arena Knockerball N’ Ninjas, Boost Mobile, the clothing retailer Windsor and a discount store where everything costs $5 or less.
Mall exits have become increasingly common nationwide as traditional brick-and-mortar players have buckled under pressure from the rise of e-commerce and shifts in consumer spending following the Great Recession.
The loss of anchors, specifically, can cause mass departures as leases often contain co-tenancy clauses that allow tenants to leave if the large department stores that help attract shoppers are no longer there.
In general, 2017 was a rough year for traditional brick-and-mortar retail. More than 8,000 retail store closings were announced last year, more than at the height of the Great Recession.
Mass company-wide closings last year also took tenants from Westfield Siesta Key and the 3-year-old Mall at University Town Center.
