Prosecutors filed murder charges Friday against two Lincoln men in connection with the alleged killing of 35-year-old Phillip Madlock.

Dominic. G. Aguirre, 36, and Paul A. Clark, 35, are each accused of second-degree murder, kidnapping, first- and second-degree assault, and two counts of using a firearm to commit a felony.

The Lancaster County Attorney's Office alleges the pair killed Madlock on June 28, 2017. His brother reported him missing about two weeks later, on July 10.

The pair have been in jail since Jan. 12, initially accused of conspiring to bring marijuana to Lincoln from northern California.

Friday, Lancaster County Judge Matt Acton set their bonds at $1.5 million apiece. Each would need to pay 10 percent, or $150,000 to be released.

If convicted as charged, both men face up to life in prison.

Police haven't said exactly how Madlock died or how a gun was involved.

"The investigation into the murder of Phillip Madlock occurring on June 28, 2017, has not revealed that he was shot," Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister said in an email Friday.

Investigators believe Aguirre and Clark sought Madlock to settle a drug debt, found him at a friend's house and "severely assaulted" him at multiple locations in the city, Bliemeister said earlier.

Madlock apparently died while he was being moved around the city, the chief said.

Bliemeister declined to comment further, citing an ongoing investigation that might result in additional arrests.

Among the questions police haven't answered is whether Madlock's body has been found.

The chief told reporters at a news conference Wednesday that a multi-agency team of investigators had searched four homes and multiple vehicles in the case. That included an "extensive" search in rural Saunders County and the examination of a car in Cass County.

Evidence was seized during those searches, and DNA testing is pending further laboratory analysis, Bliemeister said.

Investigators ask anyone with information about what happened to Madlock to call 402-441-6000 or make an anonymous report to Lincoln Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.

Madlock's killing marked the first recorded homicide of 2017.
