Wilma E. (Sand) Buckingham, 89, of Coralville died Friday, Feb. 1, 2018, at Mercy Iowa City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Steven Witt officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Lensing's Oak Hill in Coralville, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Pathways Adult Day Health Center.
Wilma was born in Walker, Iowa, on May 24, 1928, daughter of William and Frances (Kleitsch) Sand. She was raised in Independence, graduating from St. John's High School, where she played basketball. Wilma loved the basketball tournaments. She married John Buckingham on Nov. 25, 1950, at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. Wilma and John moved to the Iowa City/Coralville area in 1952. She worked at Northwest Junior High in the lunch program for many years.
Wilma was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar and Rosary Society. She helped oversee funeral dinners and church bazaars. She also was a member of the Red Foxes Red Hat Club.
Wilma loved Iowa women's basketball, gardening and her exercise and potluck groups. Most important to her was family. She was a loving and caring mother.
Wilma is survived by her children, Charles (Kimberly) Buckingham of Walford, Patricia Buckingham, Carla Buckingham (Tom O'Connor) and James Buckingham, all of Coralville; brothers, Leo Sand and Lavern Sand, both of Independence; sister, Rosaleen Turley of Marion; six grandchildren, Patrick, Sarah, Erin, Casey, Elizabeth and Anna; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Vincent; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and their son, Jack; sister, Delores (Pete) Amfahr; sisters-in-law, Norene Sand and Jean Sand; and nephews, Bill Turley, Rick Amfahr and John Sand.
