Churchill look to bounce back against Minerva

vasco: Churchill Brothers would look to bounce back from their previous match defeat when they take on table toppers Minerva Punjab in their I-League match here on Thursday. Churchill put up a good performance in the new year to remain unbeaten until they lost to Neroca FC in the last match and they now remain once again at the bottom of the league table with 10 points from 10 matches. "We should have won the match against Neroca easily after dominating the entire second half. We cannot repeat the same mistakes tomorrow against a side who are leading the table and have been consistent so far," Churchill assistant coach Alfred Fernandes said.

Sports Budget hiked by 258 Cr

new delhi: The sports ministry on Thursday received a hike of Rs 258.2 crore in the union budget for 2018-19, presented by finance minister Arun Jaitley in the Parliament here. Jaitley allocated a total of Rs 2196.36 crore for the sports ministry, compared to 1938.16 crore earmarked last year. However, one distinct feature of this year's sports budget is the reduced funding allocated to the Sports Authority of India (SAI). SAI had received Rs 495.73 crore in the 2017-18 financial year 2017-18, but this year the allocation has been reduced to Rs 429.56 crore, a cut of Rs 66.17 crore. The category which received the maximum financial assistance is the government's pet project 'Khelo India', which has received Rs  520.09 crore from the Rs 350 crore that it got last year.

Sheena wins silver in Asian Indoor Athletics

tehran: Sheena Nellckal Varkey emerged the lone Indian medal winner as she bagged a silver in women's triple jump on the opening day of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships here on Thursday. Sheena cleared 13.37m to finish second, behind Kazakhstan's Lrina Ektova who had a jump of 13.79m. Thi Thu Thao Bui of Vietnam was third with 13.22m. Two Indians — Dutee Chand (60m) and Sanjivani Jadhav (3000m) — did not start their races. Dutee did not travel to Tehran due to a minor injury on her wrist she suffered during training in Hyderabad.

Pakistan finish 3rd in ICC U-19 WC

queenstown: Two-time champions Pakistan claimed third position at the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2018 after their third-fourth position play-off match against Afghanistan was washed-out on Thursday without a ball being bowled, here. Afghanistan and Pakistan were in Group D and though Afghanistan defeated Pakistan in their opener, Pakistan topped the group after Afghanistan suffered a surprise defeat against Ireland in their last group match. While this is Afghanistan's best finish in an ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup after they claimed 16th, 10th, seventh and ninth positions in the 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 events, respectively, this is the third time Pakistan have finished third after 2000 and 2010.

RSPB maul TN 18-0 in women's National hockey

new delhi: Star-studded Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) hammered Tamil Nadu 18-0 in the opening match of the eighth Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2018 (A Division), here on Thursday. Priyanka Wankhede (12th, 17th, 25th, 26th, 40th and 52nd) starred for RSPB with six sensational goals including a penalty corner conversion.
