PEOPLE of all ages will march through the streets of a market town tomorrow to mark a major milestone in the women’s suffrage movement.

The Votes for Women Centenary Celebration March sets off from Bishop Auckland Bus Station, near the Newgate Centre, at noon. The marchers will be accompanied by a brass band as they head to the Town Hall, where there will be speeches and light refreshments.

It is hoped at least 100 women, men and children will take part in the event, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act. Passed on February 6 2018, the act allowed the first British women - those over 30 and who met the property requirements- to vote. It also gave all men over the age of 21 the vote.

Those taking part in the march tomorrow are encouraged to dress in the suffragette colours of white, purple and green and to carry placards displaying suffragette slogans.

Councillor Joy Allen joined forces with local Women’s Institute Members and a team of dedicated volunteers to organise the event, which is being supported by Bishop Auckland Town Council. The organisers hope the march will also raise awareness of the issues affecting many women today, such as the gender pay gap.

Cllr Allen said: “If marching is not for you why not come along and support the marchers and help us celebrate the votes for women centenary.”
