Smoking, littering ban at Thai tourist spots

BANGKOK • Thailand banned smoking and littering at 24 beachside locations popular with tourists over environmental concerns yesterday, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said.

Anyone who violates the law will be taken to a criminal court and could face up to one year in jail, a fine of up to 100,000 baht (S$4,190) or both, Reuters reported.


Chinese duo nabbed for smuggling turtle shells

MAKASSAR (Indonesia) • Two Chinese men have been arrested in Indonesia for attempting to smuggle 200kg of illicit turtle shells out of the country, police said yesterday.

The authorities said they raided a house in Makassar on the island of Sulawesi on Wednesday and found the massive haul of turtle shells stuffed into boxes.

DPM visits Philippines, calls on Vice-President

MANILA • Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean yesterday called on Philippine Vice-President Leni Robredo as part of his three-day visit to the Philippines.

DPM Teo and Ms Robredo reaffirmed the warm and longstanding ties between Singapore and the Philippines, which are underpinned by robust economic links and people-to-people relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
