MARFA, Texas (AP) — Searchers using a helicopter and canoes have recovered the body of a hiker missing more than a week at Big Bend National Park in West Texas.

The Presidio County Sheriff's Office says the body of 65-year-old Tim Reed was located Wednesday upriver from the mouth of Closed Canyon. A sheriff's department statement Thursday said Reed was reported missing Jan. 23 by his girlfriend after he went hiking a day earlier but didn't return.

A helicopter transported emergency personnel to near where the body was spotted. Park rangers repelled into the rugged area.

The body was moved to a river and via canoe to the Colorado Canyon area, where Reed was pronounced dead. An autopsy was ordered.

Officials didn't immediately provide a hometown for Reed or further details on the investigation.
