We've brought you the best Super Bowl LII matchup breakdown. We've made our picks. So what's left? Prop bets, of course.
Although obviously no one bets on NFL games — especially the Super Bowl — said no one ever aside from the NFL, the American Gaming Association expects Americans to spend $4.76 billion on Super Bowl LII wagers. And not even close to all of that will be spent on predicting the actual winner (Patriots -4 ½) or final score (48).
Looking for something different? Here's our list of the more fun prop bets available this year from Bovada, along with our free advice on where to put your money.
1. Will any TD be overturned by replay?
Ah yes, our nation's (other) long national nightmare, the abomination that was replay review during the 2017-18 NFL season under Al Riveron. It marred one of the year's best regular-season games, also involving New England — Patriots 27 Steelers 24 in Week 15 — and it seems overdue to again rear its ugly head on sports' biggest overall stage.
Our gut says yes (+150) on this one, but in addition to obviously craving a clean, non-controversial game, we're saying no (-200) because we'd hate to see any extra ammunition for the Patriots conspiracy theorists.
2. Will Justin Timberlake cover a Prince song during the halftime show?
We'd say let's go crazy with plenty of other bets, but passing on this one, or taking it and betting no, and you might as well kiss your money away. Timberlake, the artist who brought sexy back, not honoring the late music and sex icon, who surely inspired Timberlake as much as any other musician, in his hometown would be a bigger upset than Nick Foles outplaying Tom Brady.
3. Will "Nipplegate" be said during the broadcast?
Just what the NFL needs for its flagging ratings — Al Michaels uttering the phrase "Nipplegate" on televisions in roughly 70 percent of U.S. households. This, of course, is only a bet because Timberlake makes his triumphant return in headlining the halftime show for the first time since his role in Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction. (You can also bet on whether Michaels will use the more benign term, "wardrobe malfunction," if it suits you better.)
Yes (+500) or No (-900)? We're playing this one close to the vest by saying no.
4. Pink's hair color
Duration of Pink's rendition of the national anthem? Number of words omitted and types of Eagles gear donned? All fun bets available. But let's really challenge ourselves by wagering on Pink's hair color! We'll immediately rule out — wait for it — pink (-200), because what fun would that be? And after seeing her perform on the Grammys, we likely can also safely remove white (+400).
We're going with green (+400), as Pink — the artist, not the color — is a Philly native. And while she and Timberlake won't get paid for their services on Sunday, they're the the lead music acts at the Super Bowl debut of $1.13 billion U.S. Bank Stadium.
5. How many times will the Rocky statue in Philadelphia be shown during the broadcast?
So many times, it happens too fast? Sorry, we're already preparing for the sweet sounds of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" accompanying the statue shots. We're taking the over (+100) on more than once, but what we're hopeful of is to also see Sly Stallone's clever photoshop of Rocky Balboa donning an Eagles uni as he touches gloves with Ivan Drago (in Patriots gear) in their meet-up before Rocky ends the Cold War by downing Drago in Rocky IV.
