A 27-year-old Georgia man is behind bars on a charge of attempted murder after a woman was stabbed over the weekend and buried near Odum, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Christopher Clayton Sweat was arrested Sunday afternoon on Fannie Head Road in Jesup after a three-hour standoff, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The unidentified woman’s throat was cut Sunday, then she was buried under logs in a wooded area on Mallard Road, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Her attacker stole her car, then got in his own Chevrolet pickup truck with a camper.
The Sheriff’s Office issued a bulletin on Sweat, calling him armed and dangerous. But deputies were able to surround him on Fannie Head Road in Wayne County about 2:45 p.m.
“With use of the MRAP and tear gas, the suspect was apprehended and is now on his way to the Wayne County jail,” the Sheriff’s Office.
The woman remained conscious and was able to crawl out from under the logs, the Sheriff’s Office said. No details were released on the motive.
Sweat was also charged with aggravated assault and auto theft, according to WTOC-TV in Savannah.
