The January transfer window came to a frenetic end for Newcastle yesterday, as the club were involved in eight deadline day deals.

Islam Slimani and Martin Dubravka arrived at St James’ park on loan, while Freddie Woodman, Jamie Sterry, Jack Colback, Henri Saivet, Rolando Aarons and Aleksandar Mitrovic all left the club on a temporary basis.

January was dominated by the transfer saga, but the Magpies can no longer push deals through this season.

Their next chance to bring in new recruits comes in the summer, but if they remain in the Premier League, there are plenty of changes to when they can do deals.

Below we profile everything you need to know about the summer transfer window - should Newcastle still be a Premier League team.

When does the summer transfer window open?

It will be around May 17.

When will the 2018 summer transfer window close?

August 9.

Why is it so early this summer?

Premier League clubs voted to end the summer transfer window on the Thursday before the new season starts, in order for each club to know exactly what squad they will have ahead of the new Premier League season.

This means clubs cannot lose players a couple of games into the season, meaning there is less disruption for clubs after the season has started.

Do these changes affect other leagues?

At this moment in time, the rule change only affects the Premier League. No other league has voted to follow suit, meaning clubs will still be at risk of losing players to European clubs after the Premier League deadline.

However, Premier League clubs must still purchase players from abroad before the August 9 deadline.
