Former Loves Park restaurant to get new life as Frieda Lee

LOVES PARK — A new restaurant will open in the former home of Chen’s Cantonese Chef, 4722 N. Second St.

Steve Thompson, the city’s community development director, said Kathleen Berg recently received approval for plans to open Frieda Lee.

Thompson said remodeling plans are in the works.

Berg could not be reached for comment. Frieda Lee is the name of a Chicago jazz star.

“Of course, we encourage reuse of all buildings,” Thompson said. “We’re really looking forward to a new restaurant taking its place.”

The building has been vacant for more than a year. It was constructed in 1950, and Chen’s Cantonese Chef opened there in 1976.
