NEWLY-married American actor Kellan Lutz has revealed how his time in Queensland landed him a wife.

The Twilight heart-throb, who married Brittany Gonzales in November, told Confidential he first made contact with his would-be bride while he was filming Guardians of the Tomb on the Gold Coast in 2016.

"Brittany was working on the show called Juice and my buddy Chris brought me up … and said my buddy Kellan would be perfect for you," Lutz said.

"She was in California and I was on the Gold Coast. We talked on the phone for seven hours. We were able to be authentic because there was no fear of meeting.

"Everything went click click click and by the end of the phone call I was like I think you're my wife. That's how beautiful the story is.

"She shortly came out to visit me in Australia".

Lutz also revealed the pair never lived together before tying the knot and sought pre-marriage counselling from former NFL footballer Bryan Schwartz, who has seven children with wife Diane.

"It's hard to find a successful married couple in LA," he said.

"We would do group sessions on the phone speaking our heart out. We brought a lot of stuff to the table we didn't know, so now we are married it's so easy. I love it. I think everyone should get marriage counselling before they get married."

Guardians of the Tomb, which opens in limited Australian cinemas today, is a Chinese-Australian co-production by Aussie filmmaker Kimble Rendall that also stars Frasier's Kelsey Grammer, Shane Jacobson, Transformers' Bingbing Li and Stef Dawson of The Hunger Games.

The action adventure, about Australian funnel-web spiders unleashed in an underground Chinese tomb, rang up $US6.5 million ($8 million) in three days at the Chinese box office.

"This was probably one of my favourite projects just because I got to work on the Gold Coast for so long," Lutz said.

"It will always have a special place for me."

Lutz said he didn't have a problem with the spiders on set but added: "If this was cockroaches I don't think I could do the movie."

He also recently wrapped filming Speed Kills with John Travolta in Puerto Rico.

Guardians of the Tomb will screen at Event Cinemas at Garden City and Sunnybank.
