A man who allegedly stabbed his mother to death before threatening to jump off a bridge has been indicted on charges including first-degree murder.
Prosecutors say Jeremy A. Santiago, 26, of Salem, stabbed Andrea Krivda, 46, in their Salem City home on Nov. 5, then stabbed a man in the chest when he tried to intervene.
After the alleged assault, Santiago ran to a nearby bridge over the Salem River, where he held a knife to his stomach and threatened to jump, authorities said.
A police officer grabbed Santiago before he jumped, but the knife, believed to be the murder weapon, fell in the river.
The man who was stabbed was treated and later released.
During a detention hearing in January, Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Goodwin said authorities believe Santiago may have been high on PCP when he repeatedly stabbed Krivda.
Officials say an argument between the mother and son may have led to the attack.
In addition to murder, the Salem County grand jury indicted Santiago on charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, endangering an impaired or helpless person, tampering with evidence and weapons offenses.
Santiago remains detained at the Ann Klein Forensic Center pending his next court appearance.
