
Durban - The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) is expected to make a major announcement on Thursday afternoon, following the torching of two trains on Wednesday.
It is alleged that angry passengers torched the trains, one of which was at the Durban station. The second train was at Berea Station. Three coaches were set alight with one being extensively burnt. The train was about to leave for eMlazi.
Garrith Jamieson, Operations Director at Rescue Care, said the Durban Fire Department attended and managed to quickly extinguish the blaze before it spread.
“Rescue Care Paramedics stood by on the scene however there were no injuries reported,” he said.
The incidents are believed to have been deliberately set alight. According to Thabile Kunene, Metrorail PR Manager, an investigation has been launched.
Police and the Durban Fire Department are investigating.
