The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has decided that no charges will be filed against the driver who hit an Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy, seriously injuring him on Jan. 4.

David Hack, a 17-year veteran with the sheriff’s office, sustained head injuries and broken bones when a driver ran into him on Tienken Road near Rochester Adams High School. He was outside his patrol car policing two car accidents which had occurred there when he was struck by a 2005 Taurus at around 7:40 a.m. The driver was on her way to Oakland University, where she is a student.

Paul Walton, Oakland County’s chief assistant prosecutor, explained that it’s up to the sheriff’s office in this case to file a report with his office for review and consideration of charges. Undersheriff Mike McCabe said that won’t be done.

“Sometimes it’s determined that an accident is just that, an accident,” Walton said.

Hack spent three weeks in Ascension Crittenton Hospital and was recently flown to Denver where he’s been admitted to Craig Hospital. Craig Hospital specializes in rehabilitation of patients with traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.
