Nevada places school district on financial watch list

A state committee has placed a southern Nevada school district on a financial watch list after a third consecutive decline in the district's ending fund balance.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Local Government Finance Committee on Tuesday placed the Clark County School District on "fiscal watch status" following the recommendation from the state Department of Taxation.

The district will be required to share monthly statements and provide periodic updates.

The ending fund balance includes money assigned to certain programs and unassigned amounts. District trustees last year reduced the unassigned amounts by about 1 percent, causing the total ending fund balance to fall below the 2 percent cushion it seeks to maintain.

The state recommends for districts to maintain a total ending fund balance of at least 4 percent.
