Born in Maputo, the celebrated artists Isaac Sithole taught himself the art of wood carving through observing active artists in his home town.

His art focused mainly on carving wood sculptures, which is where he came across the techniques of woodcutting and lino printmaking.

Sithole's work is filled with glowing and vibrant colour combinations that contribute towards the message of depicting daily scenes and cultural activities within villages in South Africa and Mozambique.

The Durban Bat Centre, with the KZNSA, will this month be showcasing the late Sithole’s work in an exhibition themed, “The Best of Isaac Sithole Exhibition”.

The BAT Centre’s Visual Arts Coordinator, Khulekani Cele, said the exhibition aimed to shine a light on Sithole’s contribution to the arts industry - it would also focus on influencing and inspiring upcoming artists.

“Sithole was one of the most productive visual artists we’d ever had at The BAT Centre. We’d like the City of Durban to revisit and celebrate the intrinsic aesthetic of his work. Young artists can learn from the mastery of his craft. The exhibition will showcase his printmaking skills and his dedication to artistic practice,” said Cele.

The artist exhibited at numerous galleries in South Africa, with various private and corporate collections including the Tatham Art Gallery, the Durban Art Gallery and the Killie Campbell Museum. His artwork adorns the central food court at the Liberty Midlands Mall in Pietermaritzburg.

He exhibited extensively in his home country, in Australia and in London.

Sithole died at the age of 44, on February 7, 2012 after being ill.

The exhibition runs from February 7 to February 28, 2018 at KZNSA & the Bat Centre.

BAT Centre: February 7 - 28, 2018
KZNSA: February, 8 – 25, 2018

The exhibitions are open to all members of the public and entrance is free at both venues. - Additional info from KZNSA website.
