Boosting Your Metabolism

Claire Lavezzorio reports:
Metabolism is a word we often hear when it comes to weight-loss, but most people don't understand what it really is.

It's all the chemical processes that happen in your body to keep you alive, and determines how fast you burn calories.

If you're looking to speed up your metabolism, you aren't alone.

"I try to throw in those healthy meals once and a while as I'm getting older I feel like yeah, it's going to start slowing down on me," says shopper Amanda Pritchard.

Registered Dietician Anna Heronimus says there are three factors we can't control when it comes to metabolism.

"Age, genetics and our gender which we can't change at all. So it can be frustrating especially as we age, we don't have the metabolism of a 15 or 16-year-old," says Heronimus.

So what can you do to get the boost?

"I have my breakfast lunch and dinner and sometimes I have a morning snack," says Pritchard.

Heronimus recommends eating three meals a day about four hours apart and also adding two to three snacks to your daily routine to boost your metabolism.

Focusing on whole grains and protein can help.

"Obviously when we're fifteen we can eat and eat and eat and it doesn't affect but all of a sudden you turn 27-28 and you realize those same breakfasts you might have had or those casual pickups at the convenience store aren't really helping your weight loss anymore," says Heronimus.

Building lean muscle is another way to speed it up.

"So as we get older maybe in our 50s and 60s we should pick up some weights or join some weightlifting classes," says Heronimus.

"I mean I have three kids so that's plenty of exercise," says Pritchard.

Whether you're looking to lose weight or kick-start your energy, boosting your metabolism might be the answer.

Heronimus says healthy snacks like a handful of nuts in between your meals and drinking enough water everyday can also help with metabolism boosting.
