GARY — A 58-year-old man was pistol-whipped during an attempted robbery early Thursday, police said.

The Gary man was walking about 1 a.m. in the area of 1100 Connecticut Street when he was approached by three men wearing dark clothing, Lt. Dawn Westerfield said.

One of the men demanded money and pointed a gun at the victim, police said.

The Gary man told the three suspect he didn't have any money, and one of them struck him in the head with the gun. They went through his pockets and left, police said.

The man, who was bleeding heavily from the head, sought help from neighborhood residents, who called 911. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
