College men's basketball: Saints beat UWS in final second

Brandon Newman made one of two free throws with three-tenths of a second remaining to lift St. Scholastica to an 80-79 victory over Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday in UMAC action before 473 at Reif Gym.

The Saints' seven-straight wins are their longest streak since the end of the 2008-09 season, when they won 11 straight, and it moves them into a tie for first place with Bethany Lutheran in the conference standings.

Newman, a junior guard from Barnum, finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead the Saints (13-7 overall, 9-3 UMAC). Collin Anderson (15 points), Nate Weets (14), Sam Thompson (11) and Dylan Zimmerman (10) also scored in double figures for St. Scholastica.

Vid Milenkovic had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Yellowjackets (5-16, 3-9), while Colton Williams had 16 points and Shaq Coleman and Montroy Scott chipped in 15 points apiece.

St. Scholastica shot 64.5 percent to build a 49-36 halftime lead before going cold in the second half as UWS rallied, even taking a one-point lead with 2 minutes remaining. The Saints led by three in the final minute before the Yellowjackets' Nate Kalien sank a 3-pointer to tie it 79-79 with 23 seconds remaining, setting up Newman's heroics.
